I make a good living as a freelance writer … six figures, in fact. It’s this success that’s allowed me to start this blog and help thousands of other writers out there do the same.
But was my professional life always like this?
Did I always make a good living doing what I love, working from home and on my own schedule?
In fact, at one point, I was working a boring 9-to-5, itching to go on my own and do something more rewarding… ideally, to work from home – and get paid for it.
But I didn’t even know that was possible until much later in my career. Actually, I was over 35 before I realized it!
I don’t want you waiting in the wings for as long as I did. I want you jumping into that dream career as soon as possible. So today, I want to share my little Cinderella story. I hope it will inspire you to take that leap and start taking baby steps toward that high-earning freelance writing life you dream of.
How I Became a Successful Freelance Writer
It will probably surprise you to learn – I didn’t have any professional writing experience when I started. In fact, I was a chemist!
Sure, I’d taken English classes in college, but did I major in it?
Did I do anything more than write papers for my teachers and classes? Nope!
I majored in biology and chemistry and had dreams of becoming a DOCTOR. I volunteered in the ER and when I left school, I got a job as a lab tech. Eventually, I worked my way up to being a chemist – and made a whopping $35K.
That amount grew over the years, and eventually I was promoted to lead chemist, making $65,000 every year.
Though the money was decent, I started finding myself pretty unsatisfied – depressed, even – with the state of my career. I was in a rut.
I was working a strict 9-to-5 job, taking scheduled, 45-minute lunch breaks, and punching the clock morning and night. I was at the beck and call of my managers, and my life no longer felt like my own.
I felt confined. Constricted. Unhappy.
I wanted out.
Eventually, the stress of this unhappy lifestyle got to me. I had a panic attack at work, and my husband and I decided to make the move from New York to California to start a new life.
That’s when everything changed.
I refused to look for another job as a chemist, but I needed to contribute to our household financially (After all, LA is a pretty darn expensive place to live!). I was also having health problems, so heading back to an office wasn’t an option.
Ultimately, like we do in this day and age, I turned to the web for help. I did some research, and I learned how to create websites and do various internet marketing tasks. Doing those things worked for a while, but I just wasn’t bringing in the income I needed to get by.
Finally, I stumbled onto a site that hired freelance writers. Though I had no professional experience in writing (I did make A’s in English class, though!), I signed up, and the rest was history.
I got my first check and I was hooked. I was only making a paltry $1 to $2K a month in the beginning, but it felt great.
I loved writing. I loved making my own schedule and choosing my own work every day. I knew I had found the career for me, and I was determined to make it work.
So I kept at it. I got more clients and more projects, and I kept expanding my horizons and honing my skills.
I raised my rates. I got published. I got glowing recommendations. I marketed myself.
Then, suddenly, one day I was pulling in six figures. And I knew I had to take it one step further. I had to share what I’d learned with others. I had to help other people break free from the confines of the traditional 9-to-5 and help them work from home and have the careers and lives they dreamed of.
Now I won’t say it was easy. In fact, it was downright difficult at times. There were some months I struggled to pay the bills, and others when I was overrun with deadlines and projects.
But today, my career is the best it’s ever been – and so is my life.
You, too, can achieve this balance. And I want to help you do it.
